Military

There is no greater honor than helping America's military service men and women and their families when they are in need. And with more than 1.6 million U.S. military personnel often serving unexpectedly long and multiple tours of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan over the past five years, their need has never been greater.

While the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) provides Employee Assistance Programs, inpatient and outpatient behavioral health and medical benefits to enlisted, active and retired military personnel and their families, there are gaps in service, access, and programming. In addition, President Obama's order to rapidly draw down troops from Iraq over the next year will result in an unprecedented influx of veterans in need of support at a time when the economic downturn has caused tremendous stress on both businesses and families. As a result, the behavioral health services available to military personnel through the federal and state governments are stretched beyond capacity.

Magellan Military Assistance Program (MAP)

Magellan's Military Assistance Program is designed to work with state and federal resources, health plans and employers to provide a comprehensive solution to fill the gaps.  MAP includes the following:

  • Telephonic assessment, coaching and care coordination for service members, including:
    • Facilitating expedited access to care and community and social services
    • Resiliency and recovery skill building to stabilize and prevent relapse
    • Facilitating linkage to military, medical and community resources and databases
    • Support and coaching for the families of service members who often are "first responders" when facing a behavioral health crisis
  • Clinical screening and referrals for post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
  • Access to a crisis line 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Web information, tools and resources culturally relevant to service members and their families
  • Military specific Community Resource Database
  • Magellan Military Specialty Network
  • Provider Support

Transition Support Program

Magellan has also developed a Transition Support Program that provides vulnerable service members with a dependable partner to lean on when a transition in care is necessary due to a geographic- or service-related transition. The goal of the Transition Support Program is to avoid disruption of care and promote continued treatment progress as the service member establishes a new provider relationship.
